Being addicted to drugs or alcohol is extremely difficult. Not only are you not in your right state of mind, but you are also likely struggling with the effects of your addiction.

When the time comes and you feel ready to get into professional therapy for your addiction, finding the right match is crucial.

As you look for an addiction therapist, it is important that you know what to ask so that you can ensure that you will be getting the most appropriate care possible. You are going to want to know that the treatment you will receive will match your specific needs.

In order to make this possible, there are several questions that you can ask your addiction therapist prior to beginning your care. Consider the following:

Q: What is their treatment approach for people with an addiction to drugs or alcohol?

You may start speaking with a potential therapist and think that he or she is going to be a good fit for you, but if he or she does not utilize a treatment approach that can help you, then it might not be a match after all. So, ask him or her what types of treatment approaches he or she uses. Some therapists practice a behavioral model, while others offer more specific therapies. Depending on your needs, you may require one type of approach over another.

Q: What are their credentials?

You should never obtain therapy from someone who is not certified to provide it to you. Ask your addiction therapist what his or her credentials are. At the bare minimum, he or she should have a bachelor’s degree, license to practice, and experience. Many addiction therapists possess additional credentials, like a master’s degree.

Q: What types of therapies do they use?

Most addiction therapists are well-versed in a handful of the same types of therapies. For instance, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, and motivational interviewing are some of the top treatment modalities addiction therapists utilize. You are going to want to find an addiction therapist who can provide you various different therapies, including the ones that are going to meet your needs best.

Q: Do you also treat mental health conditions?

Addiction is a disease, not a mental illness. The types of therapies that are used to treat this specific disease are normally behavioral, as learning how to manage your addiction comes from finding ways to modify your behaviors. But, since nearly half of all people with an addiction also have a mental illness, it is important to see if your addiction therapist has the right skills to help address those issues, too.

While these are just some questions that you should ask your addiction therapist, do not be afraid to ask more questions. There is no such thing as a bad question, and as you embark on your journey towards recovery, it is critical that you receive the care that can help change your life.
